Penn State claimed the 2009 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships Sunday with dominating performances by both its men’s and women’s squads.

Competing at home, the host Nittany Lions posted a total of 195 victories to claim their 11th national title in 20 years. Notre Dame finished second with 182 wins and Ohio State was third with 165 overall victories.

The Penn State men claimed individual championships in two weapons. In the foil, Nicholas Chinman engineered come-from-behind win to capture the national championship. He edged Gerek Meinhardt of Notre Dame, 15-14. Meinhardt held a commanding 12-7 lead during the bout before Chinman responded to earn the one-touch victory. Kurt Getz of Columbia and Miles Chamley-Watson of Penn State tied for third.

In the men’s saber, it was Penn State freshman Aleksander Ochocki taking the title in another close bout. Ochocki narrowly defeated Daryl Homer of St. John’s (New York), 15-14 to earn the men’s saber. Mike Momtselidze of Ohio State and Daniel Bak of Penn State tied for third.

Wayne State (Michigan) junior Slava Zingerman captured his third straight national championship in men’s epee. Just the second athlete to claim three consecutive titles in the discipline since NCAA competition began in 1941, Zingerman defeated Princeton’s Graham Wicas, 15-7, on Friday.

Zingerman joins New York University’s Risto Hurme as the only men’s epee student-athletes to win three straight titles. He advanced to the championship round after defeating Harvard’s Benji Ungar, 15-11, in the semifinals. Wicas won his semifinal bout against Jason Pryor of Ohio State by a narrow 15-14 margin to set up the championship.

Michael Lofton of New York University is the only four-time individual national champion. Lofton earned four straight titles in the saber from 1984 to 1987.

The Penn State women’s teams also claimed individual championships in two of the three weapons. Doris Willette earned her second epee individual championship with a 15-5 victory over Hayley Reese from Notre Dame. Fellow Nittany Lion Anastasia Ferdman captured the women’s foil title. Ferdman downed Noam Mills of Harvard, 15-9, in the championship bout.

Rebecca Wood of Duke registered a 15-4 win over Caroline Vloke to claim the individual championship in women’s saber.
