Showdown at Boston College - Jan 07, 2009 | 13:54:06

This post was written by Greg Johnson, Associate Director, Champion magazine/NCAA News.

Boston College and Eagles' football coach Jeff Jagodzinski are headed for the ultimate showdown.

At stake is the immediate future of the Boston College football program.

We can debate who's right and who's wrong, but the overriding theme taking center stage is how enforceable is a contract between a coach and institution? You always hear about buy-out clauses or a coach can only leave his current position for a certain job without penalty. There always seems to be a loophole for either party involved to end the contract. STORY>>

Kansas student-athletes lend a hand - Jan 07, 2009 | 15:46:24

More than 110 Kansas student-athletes joined the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in hosting a Jayhawk SAAC/Special Olympics event recently at a family entertainment center. SAAC leaders and Special Olympics Kansas persuaded the facility to donate all-you-can-play-and-eat game cards to support the event. Football wide receiver Kerry Meier (wearing the volunteer shirt) was among the participants. "The event was a fantastic success," said Special Olympics Kansas CEO Chris Hahn. "This is what the Big 12 Conference was striving for when it selected Special Olympics as their charity of choice. What a day!"

Ball State, MAC exposed in bowl season - Jan 07, 2009 | 14:37:53

The bowl season didn't turn out how Ball State or the rest of the Mid-American Conference was hoping. Ball State got blown out by Tulsa in last night's GMAC Bowl, 45-13. The loss for the once 12-0-Cardinals was the final straw in a brutal bowl season for the MAC that saw the conference go 0-5 in its bowl games. To make it even worse, the five losses were by an average of over 16 points per game.

Seriously, get back to work - Jan 07, 2009 | 12:44:14

Florida Rep. Cliff Stearns wrote to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday asking her to move votes scheduled for Thursday evening and Friday so House members from Florida and Oklahoma can go to the Bowl Championship Series national title game.

Stearns wrote, "As you may be aware, on Thursday January 8, the University of Florida and the University of Oklahoma will play for the national football championship. Members of the Florida and Oklahoma delegations have expressed interest in attending the game as the congressional schedule allows. However, votes are currently scheduled to continue into Thursday night and Friday afternoon. We ask that you move these votes to either Wednesday and/or Thursday morning to allow Members to attend this historic game."

Insert your own joke here.

Pelosi's office said she would not agree to the request. Among the votes to be considered Thursday afternoon is certification of the Electoral College vote that gives Barack Obama the presidency.

Utah's attorney general is claiming the exclusion of the Utes in the BCS National Championship game violates federal antitrust laws. Whether or not he has a case, do you think it is appropriate for the state's attorney general to get involved with this issue? Doesn't he have other, more pressing matters to deal with?

Kay Yow to miss rest of season at N.C. State - Jan 07, 2009 | 9:32:32

In a statement released by the North Carolina State on Tuesday, Kay Yow, the Hall of Fame women's basketball coach, said she will not return to the team this season due to health issues related to her battle against cancer, the disease she was first diagnosed with two decades ago. Yow, who has missed the past four games, said she just doesn't have the energy to coach the way she always has before.

"Stepping away from coaching is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make, but I have great confidence in the experienced staff I have been working with for such a long time and the character of everyone involved in the program to respond positively to my decision," Yow said.

Associate head coach Stephanie Glance will coach the Wolfpack in Yow's absence
