The National Association of Basketball Coaches has created an initiative called “Miles for Myles,” which is designed to perpetuate the legacy of the late NCAA President Myles Brand by raising funds for cancer research via a three-mile race/walk on collegiate campuses across America on November 7 or 8.

The NCAA, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics are partnering with the NABC on the initiative honoring Brand, who died September 16 of pancreatic cancer.

The three-mile distance was chosen to signify the three divisions of NCAA athletics.

Each person participating in the “Miles for Myles” event is asked to donate $1 a mile, which will go directly to three charitable efforts to fight cancer. All the proceeds will go to the Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine, the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and Coaches vs. Cancer. (Donations for the campaign are not deductable as charitable contributions for federal income-tax purposes.)

The NABC is asking its member coaches to engage in leading this event on their campuses and to encourage presidents, faculty athletics representatives, athletics administrators, coaches and student-athletes to participate.
