Michael McRobbie, president of Indiana University, Bloomington, announced Wednesday night that the university has established a Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research in honor of late NCAA president.

An announcement in the program at Wednesday night’s tribute to Brand in Indianapolis said:

“Establishment of an endowed chair in an individual’s name is an extraordinarily high honor. It is fitting, therefore, that one be created for Myles Brand. An endowed chair enables the Indiana University School of Medicine to attract and retain an highly accomplished faculty member who will be named older of the chair. Chair holders are recognized for excellence in research, education and clinical caare, and they bring much prestige to the university.

“Earnings from the endowed fund are used to provide the chair holder with support for research activities, manuscript preparation, graduate-student assistance and other requirements of an active scholar. In this case, the Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research will be used to support a renowned basic scientist or physician-researcher who specializes in cancer. When awarding the chair, preference will be given to an individual who focuses on gastrointestinal cancers, including pancreatic cancer.

“Indiana University is the ideal setting for such research. The IU Simon Cancer Center serves as one of the largest referral centers in the country for patients with pancreatic cancer, due in large part to a faculty that includes nationally and internationally recognized clinicians and physician-scientists.

“More than a half million Americans die of cancer each year; 35,000 people are lost to pancreatic cancer alone. The Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research will contribute to our understanding of cancer today and will continue to have an impact for generations to come. It will serve as a lasting homage to an extraordinary leader.”
