Good luck, Howard
The Double-A Zone is saying goodbye to our colleague Howard Smith. Today is his last day at the NCAA National Office. Howard accepted a position as the Assistant Director of Athletics Communications at American University. He begins his new job Monday.

Michigan ends partnership with Russell
Officials at the University of Michigan announcedhttp:/i.ixnp.com/images/v3.70/t.gif the school was ending its apparel licensing agreement with Russell Corporation. University officials said Russell had violated the university's code of conduct calling on licensees to guarantee the basic rights of workers.

A good day at the park
California freshman pitcher Matt Flemer had a great first day on the moundhttp:/i.ixnp.com/images/v3.70/t.gif. On Wednesday, Flemer gave up a leadoff home run and a double before retiring the next 18 batters. His 13 strikeouts were the most by a California starter since Tyson Ross struck out 16

Stanford cuts staff
The Stanford athletics department will eliminate 21 staff positionshttp:/i.ixnp.com/images/v3.70/t.gif to help offset the expected shortfall in revenue over the next three years. The cuts are from the administrative and service areas, and will not affect the school's 35 sports or coaches.
