Minority golfer paves way for future generations
The first African-American to earn a PGA tour card, Charlie Sifford, will be honored at Riviera Country Club near Los Angeles where he won the Los Angeles Open 40 years ago. The ceremony coincides with the awarding of a special exemption named in honor of Sifford and given to a monitory golfer of high character and accomplishment. Former Oregon State golfer, Vincent Johnson, will receive this year's exemption. Johnson also won the 2007 National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.
Economic woes continue to batter
USA Today has another story about athletics departments facing the tough economic realities of the current recession. You know it is bad when Ohio State--one of the few Division I athletics programs to normally operate in the black--is anticipating significant budgetary losses.

DeSales student-athlete nets 46, including 10 three-pointers
DeSales basketball student-athlete LeighAnn Burke scored 46 points, including 10 three-pointers, in leading her team to an 86-70 victory over Delaware Valley on Tuesday night. In total, the senior was 15-30 from the field, which included 10-15 from three-point range. She also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists. DeSales is currently ranked 24th in Division III women's basketball.
