Aikman earns degree
Former UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman recently earned his degree in sociology. According to the L.A. Times, "Aikman left UCLA almost two decades ago needing only two classes to graduate, but pro football and an ensuing broadcast career kept him too busy to finish. He will walk in graduation this spring."
Harbaugh's contract extension postponed
The three-year contract extentsion of Stanford football coach Jim Harbaugh has been put on hold because of the current economic downturn.
Division III sophomore hits 1,000 point career mark
Christopher Newport basketball student-athlete Chelsie Schweers reached the 1,000 career point plateau over the weekend. In 48 games in her career, she has averaged over 21 points per game. Pretty impressive numbers from Schweers.
Roller derby a big
Women's roller derby is a growing sport in the U.S., and it's certainly receiving more publicity in recent times than ever before. If you need further proof of this, check out this recent New York Times article. Additionally, last weekend, the Double-A Zone attended the roller derby in Chicago, and put together an audio slideshow from the event, which includes interviews with former student-athletes.
Tip-in buzzer-beater
Perhaps the most exciting college basketball game of the weekend took place between two teams that entered action a combined 20 games below .500. Yesterday, Ryan Bacon's tip-in buzzer-beater gave St. Peter's a 59-58 victory over Canisius in MAAC league action.
Delaware State added to Michigan's football schedule
Delaware State will fill the Oct. 17 slot in Michigan's 12-game regular season. Delaware State is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and is a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
