The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Committee has approved a few scoring adjustments that will affect how the standings in the popular all-sports trophy affiliated with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics will be determined.

The changes affect baseball, softball, men’s water polo and women’s water polo in Division I; baseball and softball in Division II; and baseball, softball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s ice hockey in Division III.

Under the current point system in most bracketed sports, the teams that finish fifth through eighth are all tied and each receive the same amount of points, since they each lost in the quarterfinals. In the above sports, however, the fifth- through eighth-place teams don’t finish tied because of a double-elimination format or because the seventh-, fifth- and third-place match/game is played out.

The new scoring structure will take into account those games and assign points according to how teams finish. In baseball and softball for example, the two teams that finish 0-2 would now receive 73 points, while the two teams that finish 1-2 and tied for fifth would receive 78 points.

If two teams are playing for seventh place, fifth place or third place, scoring adjustments would be made accordingly.
