The College Sports Information Directors of America announced winners of the 2009 Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest.

Justin Zackal of Westminster (Pennsylvania) won the National Story of the Year category for feature profile on basketball student-athlete Bobby Glass, who returned to the court after undergoing open heart surgery.

Second-place honors went to Stuart Kaufman of Keene State, who wrote about two former baseball student-athletes that are beginning their careers as police officers.

Third-place in the category went to Stanford’s David Kiefer for a profile of a softball student-athlete.

Kiefer also earned top national honors in Coach/Administrative Profile for his work on former track/cross country coach Payton Jordan, and in the Historical Feature category with his story on Stanford men’s volleyball. His work also finished second in the national Athlete Profile and General Feature categories, and he claimed top honors in all five District 8 categories as well.

The 2008-09 contest drew 316 total entries in six categories, including the national stories of the year. More than a third of the entries were student-athlete profiles. Entries were first judged at the district level, with district winners advancing to a national committee.
