The College Sports Information Directors Association named Michigan State ice hockey goaltender Jeff Lerg and Johns Hopkins swimmer John Kegelman as the men’s at-large academic all-Americans of the year.

The at-large category includes fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.

Lerg was one of two repeat selections to the men’s at-large first team. A three-time all-Central Collegiate Hockey Association academic pick, the finance major earned the Lowe’s Senior Class Award for ice hockey and was the recipient of the league’s humanitarian award.

The senior finished his career as the all-time saves leader (3,996) at Michigan State and for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. He was a member of the Spartans 2007 national championship team and was chosen as the USA Hockey College Player of the Year that same season. 

Kegelman, a five-time all-American, is a mechanical engineering major with a perfect grade-point average. An NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipient, Kegelman was an intern with NASA Langley Research Center and also served as a tutor and a research and teaching assistant. 

The three-time Eastern College Athletic Conference champion has captained the Blue Jays for the past two years and led the squad to a runner-up finish at the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
