CoSIDA honors women’s basketball scholars

The College Sports Information Directors of America named Amber Guffey of Murray State and Emily Brister of West Texas A&M as ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans of the Year for women’s basketball.

Guffey, a graduate student and three-year starting guard for the Racers, is the fifth-leading scorer in school history and is second on the all-time assist list at Murray State. She is Academic All-American of the Year for the university division.

Guffey was twice an all-Ohio Valley selection and was the conference tournament’s most valuable player in 2008. Murray State, which won the conference championship in 2008, is 12-1 in the Ohio Valley and 17-6 overall this year.

Brister was the Lady Buffs starting point guard for four years. She holds the school record for career points with 2,645 and was the Lone Star Conference player of the year three times. She is the Academic All-American of the Year for the college division.

Brister is the fourth-leading scorer in the nation with 23.4 points per game. During her tenure, West Texas won two conference championships and this year boasts a 22-4 record.
