Capel, Williams, Johnson join NABC boardThe National Association of Basketball Coaches recently elected Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel, LSU’s Trent Johnson and Maryland’s Gary Williams to its board of directors.
Capel, the former head coach at Virginia Commonwealth, has won 69 games in his first three seasons at Oklahoma. The Sooners have earned two NCAA tournament berths in that time. Last year, Capel coached Blake Griffin to National Player of the Year honors.
The Southeastern Conference named Johnson its 2008-09 coach of the year. He earned a similar honor from the Pacific-10 Conference in 2007-08 when he was coaching at Stanford. In his first season at LSU, Johnson led the Tigers to a conference-best 13-3 league record and a 27-8 overall mark.
Williams has been head coach at Maryland since 1989, earning 13 NCAA tournament berths and two Final Four appearances. Williams won the national title with the 2002 Terrapins. He ranks sixth among active coaches with 625 victories in 31 seasons. In 2004, the NABC recognized Williams for his work with Coaches vs. Cancer.
