NCAA schools affected by the wildfires in the Los Angeles area are monitoring whether the conditions will cause them to cancel or postpone various athletics competitions.

Most recently, Redlands was forced to cancel its women’s soccer scrimmage against La Sierra. However, it plans to play its home opener against Concordia-Moorhead on Friday as scheduled.

Additionally, several area schools have modified practice schedules to protect student-athletes.

Of immediate concern is the air quality. The Big West Conference has an air-quality protocol it uses to govern league championships and may rely on that to guide upcoming contests.

Three area schools – UCLA, Cal State Los Angeles and Occidental – have issued statements to keep their constituents apprised of new developments (see the NCAA Double-A Zone for updates). UCLA officials considered postponing the school’s football opener against San Diego State but have not yet done so.
