NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland – The 2009 Convention is off to a fast start for some attendees as NCAA administrators selected as part of the latest class of NCAA Fellows met for the first time Tuesday.

The 2009-10 class of the Fellows Leadership Program is composed of 12 administrators from NCAA member institutions representing all three divisions. A committee made up of Fellows Program alumni and members of the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee chose the participants.

Developed in 1997 by the MOIC and CWA, the Fellows program enhances employment and leadership opportunities for women and minorities at the senior management levels of intercollegiate athletics administration.

Participants gain academic and practical work experience during an 18-month program that enables them to develop talents and abilities and mesh skills with career aspirations. Each NCAA Fellow is assigned an executive mentor and is responsible for completing an in-depth project outside of their normal job responsibilities.

NCAA Fellows remain at their current institutions for the duration of the program and attend the NCAA Convention and relevant governance meetings, advances and workshops. The program’s emphasis includes marketing, public and media relations, budgeting, leadership, compliance and fund-raising.

Yesterday’s orientation was the first opportunity for the newest fellows to meet each other and become acquainted with their executive mentors.

The fellows will meet again in April in Indianapolis.
