UCLA claimed the Division I Men’s Golf Championship May 31 with a one-stroke victory,  the first men’s golf title for the Bruins since 1988.

UCLA shot a final-round 306 on Purdue’s Kampen Course to edge Pac-10 rival Stanford, which shot the field’s best round on the last day with a 302. Southern California completed the conference sweep for the Pac-10, coming in two strikes behind the Bruins at 44-over-par. Ten-time champion Oklahoma State and Clemson rounded out the top five team-finishers.

“It is just absolutely unbelievable,” said UCLA head coach Derek Freeman. “USC is an incredibly good golf team and if we had this (tournament) again in another four days they’re liable to beat us. Stanford is also a very good team. I think coming down the stretch we knew it was close. We were up one, down one and then on 17 we had two balls go in the water. We leaked some oil coming in, but we’re up one at the end and I’ll take it.”

UCLA benefited from the standout play of senior Kevin Chappell, who won the individual championship with a 2-under par 286. Chappell was the only participant with two sub-70 rounds and finished three strokes ahead of Indiana junior Jorge Campillo and Washington sophomore Nick Taylor.

After the final round, Chappell was named the Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Player of the Year and also received the Arnold Palmer Award, which is presented to the NCAA champion each year.

“This was my fifth college win and the first I get to enjoy with my team,” Chappell said. “Of course it feels special, I get to celebrate this with five, six, seven other guys that are here and the other three that are at home. It’s just awesome. It’s the best way to end my college career.”

Campillo, who is the first Indiana golfer to finish second overall since 1969, was pleased with how he performed 100 miles north of the Bloomington campus.

“I kept getting better in this tournament as it went on. The final nine on the first day really gave me the confidence to play better as the tournament went on. I’m really proud of myself for finishing second,” Campillo said.

The championship was the 103rd for UCLA, which also claimed the women’s water polo and women’s tennis titles this spring.
