Tennessee women’s basketball Coach Pat Summitt reached 100 NCAA tournament wins March 25 with a victory over Purdue, 78-52. She is the first coach in Division I basketball history (either gender) to reach the milestone. She also holds the career victories record with 979.
Second on the list of most tournament wins for a coach is Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma with 63, followed by Leon Barmore’s 56. Barmore coached Louisiana Tech from 1983-2002. Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski is the men’s basketball tournament leader with 69 wins, Dean Smith is second with 65 and John Wooden third with 47.
It is Summitt’s second recent milestone achieved against Purdue. The longtime Tennessee coach became the all-time wins leader in either gender with a second-round tournament win over the Boilermakers in 2005. The 75-54 win gave Summitt 880 career victories, one more than former North Carolina men’s coach Dean Smith.
Summitt’s Lady Vols have played in 27 consecutive tournaments and 17 total Final Fours with seven national titles. Andy Landers’ Georgia Bulldogs have 25 tournament appearances. Barmore is second on the Final Four appearances list with 9.
