In the 1988 flick "Coming to America," comedian Eddie Murphy played the role of a prince who travels to New York to find a wife and the future queen of his country.
The circumstances are different, but St. Francis College's Barbora (Bara) Galandakova stepped off the plane from her native Prague this past fall with plans to reign over a court of her own. The basketball court, that is. When the 6'7" Galandakova arrived in August, it was the first time she'd ever set foot in the United States – and the series “MTV True Life” was there to document it all.
Premiering February 2 at 2 p.m. Eastern, the episode "Coming to America" will feature everything from Galandakova's first day of classes to her first points of the season for the Terriers to phone calls home, road trips and site-seeing excursions.
"We were nervous about letting the camera follow Bara around," St. Francis head women's basketball coach Brenda Milano said. "It can be hard for any student to make the transition from high school to college. When you throw in that she's in a new country, using her second language and has all the commitments and responsibilities of playing basketball, you can see why we were concerned. But Bara's handled it great, she's already very mature."
Galandakova admitted the process of filming was sometimes difficult but said the crew was nice and she made some good friends out of the deal. "I'm looking forward to watching the show and I'm certain the program will present me as well as St. Francis College in a good light."
The episode will be rebroadcast several times throughout the month. The college is planning a viewing party on February 11.
