Northwestern State men’s basketball coach Mike McConathy and the Texas-San Antonio men’s basketball program both reached milestone wins last week. Both schools belong to the Southland Conference.
The Roadrunners beat McMurry, 80-55, November 25 to earn the program’s 400th victory. Sophomore Devin Gibson, junior Omar Johnson and senior Travis Gabbidon each scored in double figures in the milestone win. Gibson also posted six steals, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Three days later, McConathy’s Demons handed him his 500th career victory when they beat Alcorn State, 77-65, November 28. Fans chanted McConathy’s name and held “500” signs.
“I think about the players, through the years, and how hard they’ve worked for us,” he said. “That’s what makes it special, having the opportunity to reflect back on the early days building the program from scratch at Bossier Parish Community College, and how so many people – players and friends and family – bought into what we were doing. Then coming to Northwestern, where my dad and uncles played, having the chance to coach some great young men, some tremendous competitors, from day one through the 10 seasons here, and getting such wonderful support from so many. I’ve been very blessed.”
Northwestern State lost to Troy on November 29 and beat Centenary on December 1, bringing McConathy’s career record to 501-297.
