Southern California started on top, played steady in the middle and finished strong to win the Division I Women’s Golf Championships team title at the University of New Mexico Golf Course in Albuquerque May 23. It was the second national championship for the program and first since 2003.

The Trojans began the final round with a three-stroke lead over UCLA and played well enough to gain some breathing room en route to a six-stroke victory over the Bruins. Three-time defending champion Duke finished 12 strokes behind the Trojans at 28-over par.

“Back in December, we had a party for the team and I had a cake made that said, ‘Believe in the Dream,’” said Southern California head coach Andrea Gatson. “I told them throughout the season to believe in the dream. We talked about it all year long. And it came true. It’s incredible.”

Purdue and Arizona State finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Denver, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Florida also finished among the top 10. Georgia and Wake Forest tied for 10th overall.

Southern California’s Belen Mozo shot a 69 on the first day to take an early lead in the individual tournament, but fell to fourth overall with a final-day 75. Senior Dewi Schreefel, the 2006 NCAA individual champion and a two-time all-American entering the tournament, clinched the third top-10 NCAA finish of her career, tying for eighth with a 4-over 292 (73-78-72-69). Lizette Salas, the Pacific-10 freshman of the year, tied for 15th overall with a 7-over 295.

Arizona State junior Azahara Munoz picked an ideal time to win her first collegiate tournament, claiming medalist honors with a 1-under 287. Munoz topped UCLA’s Tiffany Joh in a playoff-hole tiebreaker to emerge as the winner. The Spanish-born Munoz is the ninth Sun Devil golfer to win the individual title and first since Grace Park did it in 1999.

A Division I women’s golf program has never won more than three consecutive national championships, and Duke was unable to become the first, failing to send senior Jennifer Pandolfi off with four titles in four years.

The Blue Devils didn’t go down without a fight, however, saving their best golf for the final round. Duke carded a tournament-best 7-under par on Friday to jump from eighth to third in the standings.

“I’m extremely proud of this team, the way they sustained their belief all the way to the very end. We didn’t play this last day for anything other than to win this championship – all the way to the end. They were playing because they knew that anytime the birdies could start rolling in and the bogeys could roll in for the other teams. There were always hope for the win. I was very impressed with that,” said head coach Dan Brooks.

Duke’s Jennie Lee had the tournament’s lone hole-in-one, acing the 12th hole on the final day of competition
