A soggy weekend couldn’t stop thousands of fans, tailgaters and the Double-A Zone from enjoying South Carolina State’s homecoming celebration.
The NCAA was on campus Friday and Saturday to record a video, highlighting athletics traditions. The Association’s official blog came along for unprecedented, all-access reporting live from the school’s Orangeburg, South Carolina, campus.
The Double-A Zone followed the South Carolina State football team for 24 hours. Above is a video highlighting the pre-game preparation. Click here to watch other videos and to read the live blog. |
In addition to reporting on homecoming festivities, the Double-A Zone spent 24 hours with the football team as it prepared to take on Norfolk State – a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival that beat South Carolina State in a close game last year. A live blog of the experience is featured and four videos highlighting the experience accompany the posts.

For the first time, the NCAA also used Twitter – a microblogging social network – to report on the festivities.
Homecomings are rich with tradition, but the community and alumni support at South Carolina State were especially unique. Tailgaters started appearing as early as Friday afternoon, preparing meals to share with everyone (even strangers).
One tailgater even slaughtered a pig and a deer, which were arrayed on his massive grill in the form of homemade sausage, ribs and roasts.
Other events included a Greek step show, where the fraternities and sororities showcased their dancing and step talent. The homecoming parade featured several high school bands and floats from university, alumni and community groups.
