A subcommittee of the Division I Committee on Infractions is expected to wrap up its work examining the penalty structure and forward recommendations to the full committee sometime next month.
The review, which was broad-based and comprehensive, was launched to ensure that the structure works as intended. All aspects of the penalty configuration were subject to scrutiny, including the use of certain penalties, repeat-violator penalties and organization of the structure.
And while infractions committee chair Josephine Potuto, faculty athletics representative at Nebraska, said she believes the committee would have the authority to enact any of the recommendations currently under discussion, the group will forward the suggestions to the appropriate governance bodies for consideration as legislation.
“At this point, we need leadership from the membership as to where to go from here,” Potuto said. “We want to make sure we are on the same page as the membership with these things.”
Input from the national office enforcement staff is also being considered.
Potuto said a variety of changes are being contemplated, including eliminating repetitive and confusing language, reorganizing the structure, elimination of some penalties and imposing some penalties that haven’t been used recently.
“If it will make the penalty structure more effective, the approach needs to be examined,” she said.
Recommendations could come to the Division I governance structure as early as this summer.
