The Morgan State men’s lacrosse team will be featured in “The Morgan Lacrosse Story,” a PBS documentary produced by Team Sound and Vision. The first and only historically black university to offer lacrosse, Morgan State created the team at a time of racial tension nationally, and the team had to overcome obstacles on its way to upsetting the top-ranked Washington and Lee team in 1975.
The school later dropped lacrosse in 1981, but has seen a resurgence with the formation of a club team in 2005.
The film explores the issues of race and class in the Civil Rights era and highlights the team members and coaches who told their stories for the documentary. Producer/director Luke David called the Morgan Lacrosse Story “a legacy worth preserving.” The team was the subject of a 2005 ESPN story and the book “Ten Bears” by former Morgan State coach Howard “Chip” Silverman and one of his former student-athletes, Miles Harrison. Silverman died March 6 after a battle with cancer.
The film is set to air April 4 on PBS. Morgan State previewed the film earlier this month.
