Stanford baseball coach Mark Marquess recorded his 1,300th career victory April 6 with a 10-2 victory over top-ranked Arizona State. The win moved Marquess into a tie for 10th place in career wins for Division I baseball coaches.

“It’s nice,” said Marquess. “But it just means I’ve been coaching a long time and have had a lot of good players.”

Marquess is in his 32nd season coaching his alma mater. He coached the Cardinal to back-to-back College World Series titles in 1987 and 1988. His teams have won Pac-10 titles in 12 of the last 23 seasons, and he has coached several players drafted into the major leagues. Several of his former assistants are now head coaches themselves, including David Esquer at California and Mark O’Brien and Santa Clara.

He coached the U.S. team to a gold medal in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. After graduating from Stanford he spent four years in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox organization before entering coaching.
