A dominating team performance by Washington at the Division I Women’s Cross Country Championships and Sally Kipyego’s third straight individual title suggested new definitions for the word “unbeatable.”
The Huskies rolled to their first Division I Women’s Cross Country Championships team title Monday in Terre Haute, Indiana, with the freshman duo of Christine Babcock and Kendra Schaaf leading the way, finishing among the top 10 runners who scored points for teams and top 12 overall. Washington beat Oregon, the meet’s runner-up for the second straight year, by 52 points.
If anything, the heavily favored Huskies exceeded expectations.
Oregon tallied 131 points in the race, better than last year’s 177, and actually managed to offset the Washington freshmen with its own top-10 finishes by championships veterans Alex Kosinsky – a sophomore who improved on her top-15 finish in last year’s race – and junior Nicole Blood.
However, Washington’s third through fifth scoring runners all crossed the finish line well ahead of the Ducks’ third finisher to round out the team’s 79-point effort – and for good measure, the Huskies’ sixth runner (whose placement doesn’t count toward the point total) nearly did so, too.
Washington’s victory closes out a dominating year for a team that previously never had cracked the top five at the championships.
Coach Greg Metcalf said the race didn’t go exactly as planned – but with Washington’s depth, the Huskies had lots of room to improvise.
“Honestly, about 1,500 meters in, I thought we were a little back,” he said. “It actually didn’t go according to plan. But (team members) did what they do all year long. After the (3-kilometer mark), they moved and ran better after that.
“Our front team of Christine Babcock and Kendra Schaaf were in the lead pack right where they needed to be. They did a great job. And Mel (Marie Lawrence, who scored 19th) and Katie (Follett, following on Lawrence’s shoulder to score 20th) closed well and lowered our team’s score dramatically after half way.
“Things didn’t go 100 percent as planned, but I won’t get greedy. It was good to win.”
Texas Tech’s Kipyego proved herself a master of Indiana’s November swings in weather, gutting out a windy day that earlier pushed rain showers over the expanse of the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which now has hosted the championships for five straight years.
“It was hard,” she admitted after finishing seven seconds ahead of Florida State’s Susan Kuijken – her tightest margin of victory on the course, where she won by 26 seconds in warmer but muddy conditions in 2006 and won by 18 seconds last year.
But the competition pushed Kipyego to break her own year-old course record by more than two seconds, as she finished with a time of 19 minutes, 28.1 seconds.
“It was cold and windy and the girls that were running next to me were running hard out there. It was probably the hardest NCAA cross country race of all the three. I am just happy to get through and win.”
With the win, Kipyego etches her name in NCAA cross country records next to a legendary trio of men who won three individual Division I championships: Washington State’s Gerry Lindgren in the late 1960s, Oregon’s Steve Prefontaine in the early 1970s and Washington State’s Henry Rono in the late 1970s.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Kipyego said. “I am absolutely happy for just being able to come here and win three in a row. It’s a blessing to me. It’s one opportunity that you just don’t get every day.”
