The Division I Football Bowl Subdivision faculty athletics representatives recently developed a resolution to honor the life of Rice FAR Jim Castaneda, who died November 2.
The resolution honors Castaneda’s service as a professor of Spanish, golf coach and FAR, as well as his service to the NCAA and advocacy for the student-athlete.
The resolution’s text follows:
The Division 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives mourn the sudden loss on November 2, 2008, of Jim Castaneda of Rice University. The 1A FARs and all those connected with intercollegiate athletics will miss his wisdom and counsel, as well as his ever‐present good cheer and warm smile. In recognition of his life, the 1A FARs adopted the following resolution:
• Whereas Professor Jim Castaneda had served on the Rice faculty as a professor of Spanish and specialist in Golden Age Spanish Literature for 46 years;
• Whereas Professor Jim Castaneda served as Rice’s faculty athletics representative for 34 years;
• Whereas Professor Jim Castaneda served as Rice’s golf coach for 16 years;
• Whereas Professor Jim Castaneda was one of the most respected advocates in the country for student‐athletes’ rights as well as for academic reform;
• Whereas Professor Jim Castaneda served the NCAA in many capacities, including chairing its important Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet;
• Whereas Professor Jim Castaneda was one of the most thoughtful, caring, considerate and compassionate voices in intercollegiate athletics;
• Be it therefore resolved that the 1A FARs honor the life and accomplishments of Professor Jim Castaneda. He exemplified the best of what a faculty athletics representative is and seeks to do.
