The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of September 29-October 3.
· The Amateurism Cabinet met for the first time and set its priorities, including amateurism rules for prospective student-athletes. Cabinet members learned about the complexities of amateurism and how certain rules are out-dated or need tweaking. The cabinet meets next in February.
· Several men’s basketball coaches spoke out on Capitol Hill to request more funding for cancer research. Among the speakers was Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun, who is undergoing treatment for cancer.
· The Division I membership will review the emerging sports list and amateurism legislation regarding prize money during this legislative cycle.
· Connecticut signed a 10-year, $80-million deal with IMG College to manage its multimedia rights.
· North Dakota State celebrated its reclassification at halftime of a football game last month. The school invited past and current administrators and student-athletes to help cut a ribbon to honor past contributions and the future in Division I.
