The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I News from August 18-29:

  • The Central Collegiate Hockey Association became the first conference to officially re-introduce the shootout. The option was returned to the rules book earlier this year. Hockey East is also considering reinstituting the shootout. The winner of CCHA games tied after regulation and a five-minute overtime will be determined by a three-player shootout.

  • The Ivy League and the SEC announced broadcast agreements. The Ivy League partnered with VERSUS, and the SEC revealed the details of two long-term deals, one with CBS Sports and the other with ESPN.

  • The Division I governance structure was reorganized, and Virginia FAR Carolyn Callahan will lead the Academics Cabinet. Callahan’s goal is that the cabinet is recognized as a group that sets high standards and also looks for ways to enhance a student’s ability to achieve.

  • The National Wrestling Coaches Association is working hard to improve the academic performance of wrestling student-athletes, and the group will focus on helping coaches become more than just X’s and O’s teachers by forming a leadership academy for new coaches.

  • Proposals in the 2008-09 cycle seek to expand financial aid limitations in the sports of baseball and women’s volleyball.

  • Tom Osborne, athletics director at Nebraska, talked to the NCAA News about the changes in intercollegiate athletics since he entered the field in the 1960s, including academic reform, recruiting changes and societal changes overall.
