The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of September 22-26.
• The application process for grants to help market Division I women’s basketball programs will open October 13. The process will be conducted online only, and the grants are designed to grow women’s basketball at a grass-roots level.
• Mike Rogers, Baylor’s FAR and chair of the Amateurism Cabinet, draws on his experience as a former student-athlete when making decisions about legislation and policies. Student-athlete well-being is one of his top priorities, and he looks forward to working on a focused cabinet.
• LSU’s baseball team posted a 1,000 APR and a 2.83 grade-point average in the 2007-08 academic year, jump from the 903 the team earned when coach Paul Mainieri joined the Tigers at the end of the 2006 season. Baseball was one of the first sports to receive special attention by a working group put together to examine its academic issues. Mainieri was a member of that group.
• The Championships/Sport Management Cabinet endorsed a recommendation from the NCAA staff to increase the travel-policy mileage limitation from 350 to 400 for the 2008 fall championships and supported a recommendation that increases the policy regarding ground commute from the nearest airport to the championships site from 120 to 150 miles.
• Charlotte’s chancellor recommended that the school add football in 2013 and a total of three women’s sports by 2023. The recommendation is the result of nearly two years of work by several people on campus. The university governing board will vote on the proposal next month.
• The Division I membership will consider several proposals modifying the use of nontraditional coursework – including Internet courses – to meet NCAA eligibility standards.
