The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of September 15-19.
• Grace Calhoun, chair of the Student-Athlete Awards, Benefits and Financial Aid Cabinet, uses the problem-solving skills she learned as an engineering student to look critically at financial aid issues and devise new ways to serve the membership. Calhoun, an administrator at Indiana, has a long history of committee service.
• Championships travel costs rose 31 percent in Division I last year and 58 percent over the last three years, and the membership is reviewing travel-related issues. The increase in fuel prices, decreased flight capacity and new trip-related fees all contributed to the higher-than-expected expenses.
• Several proposals to change the recruiting rules will be considered in this legislative cycle, including measures modifying when a prospect officially becomes a student-athlete and one altering the ban on electronic communication with recruits.
• NCAA representatives, corporate champion and partners and student-athletes and administrators from Detroit joined forces as part of a pre-Final Four summit to clean up a city park and ball field.
