The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of September 8-12:

• The Academics Cabinet set its priorities at its first meeting this week, believing that 2-4 transfers, nontraditional coursework and academic support services will be the most important challenges facing the cabinet in its first year of existence. The group also took positions on several pieces of legislation.

• Several proposals in the 2008-09 legislative cycle address the playing and practice season in baseball. To read more about those proposals and other playing and practice season legislation, click here.

• Championships/Sports Management Cabinet Chair Jeff Schemmel, a former track and field all-American, wants to enhance the championships experience for student-athletes, even in the face of rising travel costs. Once a practicing attorney, Schemmel is passionate about college athletics. The cabinet meets September 16-17.

• Recruiting Cabinet Chair Petrina Long, who once tutored student-athletes for work-study, anticipates that the use of technology in recruiting will be one of the biggest issues the cabinet will grapple with in the coming year. A former chair of the recruiting subcommittee of the former Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, Long believes communication with the membership will be a key to the success of the new governance structure. The cabinet meets September 18-19.
