Division I Rewind
The NCAA News
The following is a summary of Division I News from the week of June 16-20.
- The Academic Performance Program and its measuring tool, the Academic Progress Rate, garnered some attention this week from the Knight Commission, which met with NCAA officials on Tuesday to discuss the program. Committee on Academic Performance Chair Walter Harrison, president of the University of Hartford, emphasized that the point of the program is to be fair and flexible yet firm. Also at the Knight Commission meeting, members agreed with Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach Paul Hewitt that the season should be shorter to promote academic success for student-athletes who participate in the sport.
- The Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet moved to define “education-impacting disabilities” and codify common practices and policies with regard to student-athletes with such a diagnosis. The cabinet also recommended further study of the impact of transferring on student-athletes, particularly with regard to student-athletes who transfer to NCAA member institutions from two-year institutions.
- Men’s track student-athletes at Florida State and women’s track student-athletes at LSU won their team championships in their sports over the weekend. The LSU women are back in the winner’s circle for the first time since 2003, and overcame a 31-point deficit to get there. Meanwhile the Florida State men accomplished a “three-peat” with help from Walter Dix’s 200-meter dash victory and an injured Charles Clark.
