The following is a summary of Division I News from the week of June 9-13.
- Pacific-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced his intention to retire June 30, 2009. When he retires, he will have completed 26 years as leader of the league and 33 years of service to the Pac-10. He is the longest-serving commissioner of a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conference.
- Officials with the NCAA and the city of Omaha signed a contract keeping the Men’s College World Series in the city until 2035. The agreement takes effect in 2011 when the tournament moves from Rosenblatt Stadium to the new 24,000-seat ballpark in downtown Omaha. The Men’s College World Series has been played in Omaha since 1950.
- Gene McArtor will replace Dave Yeast as NCAA National Coordinator for Baseball Umpires. McArtor, who spent more than 40 years at Missouri as a student-athlete, coach and administrator, has experience on the Division I Baseball Committee and was an official for high school and college football.
- The Gateway Football Conference will be rebranded to be the Missouri Valley Football Conference. It is the second name change for the 24-year-old league, which has also competed under the moniker Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference.
