The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of April 7-11.
The Board-established Task Force on Commercial Activities in Intercollegiate Athletics will hold its first meeting April 12, with the goal of identifying issues that need to be addressed and finding a level of commercial activity that respects higher education as the framework for intercollegiate athletics. The group is expected to forward recommendations to the Board by the end of the year.
Rutgers’ Emmett Gill, professor of social work, spoke to the Double-A Zone about the portrayal of female and minority athletes in the media. Gill’s also addressed the impact of the Don Imus controversy that impacted the Rutgers community last spring.
A group of Division I football coaches will visit troops in the Middle East in the week leading up to Memorial Day. The coaches will meet with troops and conduct a question-and-answer session while overseas.
The Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships were decided, with Kansas winning the battle of No. 1s on the men’s side and Tennessee cutting down the nets in Tampa.
