The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of March 24-28.
Faculty Athletics Representatives Association President Alan Hauser shared his thoughts on the progress of Division I academic reform efforts, including the Academic Progress Rate. Hauser praised NCAA President Myles Brand’s leadership and indicated that the Committee on Academic Performance is doing a good job fine-tuning the program in response to unforeseen circumstances.
A Christian Science Monitor reporter recently researched how many Division I schools had basketball courts named after an influential coach. His investigation found 30 such institutions, including six in the Pac-10, the most of any conference. If you have a court named after a coach and you aren’t included on the list, email Gary Brown of The NCAA News.
Tennessee’s Pat Summitt reached 100 tournament wins on Tuesday in a victory over Purdue. Summitt has the most wins in the tournament of any Division I coach (either gender), and she also holds the career wins record with 979.
The Ohio Valley Conference announced the creation of a basketball enrichment plan, which will limit the number of guarantee and away-from-home non-conference games and will allow league members to play up to two non-Division I games. Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said the plan, in conjunction with a matching grant program announced earlier this year, will help the league’s basketball teams become more successful.
