Following is a summary of  Division I News from the week of March 17-21.

Southeastern Conference Associate Commissioner Greg Sankey gave a firsthand account of how the conference handled the crisis following Atlanta’s severe weather during the league’s men’s basketball tournament. “At the end of the day, it was about our young people and the integrity of the competition more than anything else,” Sankey said. “Folks may disagree, but the games were still pretty intense and our people were great about how they adjusted and moved forward to manage a crisis.”

Division I Women’s Basketball Committee Chair Judy Southard talked about how the committee makes its selections and handles the inevitable criticism after the bracket is announced. “After that initial sense of relief that the bracket is done comes that state of anxiety awaiting the reactions,” she said. “We are all human. We know deep inside it’s a no-win situation in some regards, because you can’t please all the people all the time.”

The NCAA is staging a special screening of a documentary detailing the 1963 Division I men’s basketball Mideast regional semifinal between Loyola (Illinois) and Mississippi State. The film, which chronicles the role of athletics in social change, will debut March 29 at the Midwest regional in Detroit.

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Commissioner Richard Ensor was a pivotal figure in the recent reorganization of the Division I governance structure. His varied background, including stints as an SID, a marketing professional and a law professor, comes in handy as he works to raise the profile of the MAAC.
