Boston College revealed a life-sized bronze statue of former Eagle and Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie last week. Flutie attended the unveiling outside Alumni Stadium.
The statue, designed and constructed by Harry Weber, depicts Flutie about to release his famous “Hail Mary” pass at Miami in 1984.
“This statue is a fitting tribute to the man who made Boston College football a household name,” said Athletics Director Gene DeFilippo. “Doug played a huge role in the history of Boston College athletics. We’re thrilled that he will be honored permanently outside Alumni Stadium.”
Flutie and his family, along with several members of the 1984 Eagles team, were on hand for the unveiling of the statue.
The Pit gets a facelift
New Mexico announced last week plans for a $60 million renovation of University Arena, dubbed “The Pit.” The renovations include 60,000 square feet of new face, an expanded concourse, 40 new luxury suites and 300 new club seats and new locker-room facilities for the Lobos.
Molzen-Corbin & Associates designed the renovations to improve the fan experience without changing the facility’s intimate nature and history.
The updates will enhance the use of technology in the arena, including video boards, ribbon boards and digital signage. Concessions will double, and the fan store will be nearly twice as big. The new facility will also add a lounge for New Mexico alumni from all sports and feature extensive glasswork and views of both the Sandia Mountains and downtown Albuquerque.
“Our goal is to create the best collegiate basketball venue in the nation,” said Athletics Director Paul Krebs.
