Division I notes: Program celebrates reclassification

North Dakota State celebrated its past and future at halftime of its September 6 football game against Central Connecticut State. Student-athletes from the past met with current student-athletes at midfield, cutting a ribbon to honor past contributions and the school’s transition from Division II to Division I.

The ceremony was held during the school’s hall of fame reunion weekend, attended by nearly 300 people. Past and present administrators also joined the festivities.

The Bison are now members of the Summit League, the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Western Wrestling Conference.

Patriot League academic officers meet

Patriot League chief academic officers met at Holy Cross September 10-11 to share ideas and develop relationships, the second consecutive year such a gathering has occurred.

The group discussed common themes and issues in academics, including globalization of the campus and accountability in higher education. Attendees also discussed an upcoming Patriot League Conference, “Exploring Topics of Mutual Interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Disciplines.” The conference is open to faculty and administrators from conference schools and is sponsored by league provosts.

La Salle student-athletes mentor kids

La Salle student-athletes renewed their relationships with elementary-school students through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program at a luncheon last month. It is the fourth year for the partnership.

Part of “Project Teamwork” between the two schools, the partnership extends beyond the mentoring involved in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Dozens of La Salle student-athletes helped build a playground at the school last month and the athletics department has hosted other activities for the elementary school kids.

Miscellaneous

The U.S. Army will continue its sponsorship relationship with the Horizon League. The Army has sponsored the conference’s men’s and women’s soccer and baseball championships and the league’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. The Army will continue to sponsor the conference scholar-athlete awards … The Sun Belt Conference entered into an agreement with the Leffler Agency to promote the conference’s men’s basketball championship. The agency will create an advertising campaign designed to promote ticket sales for the league … The Tennessee volleyball team will host “Dig for the Cure” at its October 3 match against Auburn. Each dig recorded by the Lady Vols will raise money for breast cancer research.
