The University of Hawaii, Manoa, will host a new eight-team men’s basketball tournament beginning next year. Called the Diamond Head Classic, the tournament will be played over three days in conjunction with the Hawaii Bowl.

The championship game will be played on Christmas. ESPN is sponsoring the event and will televise at least 10 of the 12 games.

The tournament becomes the second major basketball event for the state. The Maui Invitational takes place during Thanksgiving week.

No teams have been announced yet.

Eagles, Tarheels fight MS

In honor of a teammate diagnosed with the disease, the Boston College field hockey team in conjunction with North Carolina hosted ACC vs. Ivy field hockey games to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis.

Senior forward Kathleen Murphy was diagnosed with MS in 2007.

All the participating players, coaches and referees wore orange sweatbands and the letters BCFH (Boston College Field Hockey) No. 17 in Murphy’s honor.

The games raised more than $1,300 for the Central New England chapter of the National MS Society.
