Conferences: Gardner-Webb became the 10th Big South Conference institution last week. The school had been an associate football member since 2002 and announced its intention to move to the Big South from the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2006. Gardner-Webb teams are immediately eligible for all Big South championships and honors. Presbyterian College, which joined the Big South on July 1, 2007 as a reclassifying member from Division II, will be eligible for regular-season championships and conference honors and awards this fall … The Mid-American Conference unveiled new logos last week. The new marks feature the year 1946 – the year the MAC was founded – and represent the league’s first major rebranding effort since 1987. A four-member subcommittee helped Joe Bosack Graphic Design Company redesign the logos, and all MAC governance groups were asked for feedback. "We are excited about the debut of an updated brand for the Mid-American Conference, one that recognizes our tremendous tradition while remaining current in today's major college athletics environment,” said MAC Commissioner Rick Chryst. “One of the primary benefits of the program will be the opportunity to provide a broad and consistent conference message, across a variety of platforms, on all of our campuses." … Southern Illinois-Edwardsville officially joined the Ohio Valley Conference on July 1. The Cougars will begin competing in the Ohio Valley as it reclassifies to Division I. All sports programs will be eligible for postseason competition by 2012-13.
Facilities: Oakland will treat its Athletic Center with the leading-edge technology of Sports Antimicrobial System, a comprehensive treatment that kills illness-causing micro-organisms such as MRSA and inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and fungi for up to three years. The system is used by the NFL, the NBA and MLB. … Bucknell’s Krebs Family Fitness Center will receive a new floor this month. The track and jump areas inside Gerhard Fieldhouse will include new lines for the courts and track and a resealing of the racquetball and squash courts and the aerobics studio. The work should be done before classes resume for the fall semester.
Miscellaneous: Former Southeastern Louisiana women’s basketball player and current Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts will receive the 2008 WNBA Inspiration Award, which recognizes an individual who inspires others through her dedication to work, family and community. Roberts is being honored for humanitarian efforts in helping Hurricane Katrina victims and her courageous public battle with breast cancer in addition to other accomplishments. Roberts received the NCAA’s Silver Anniversary Award in 2008.
