Milestones: UC Irvine head baseball coach Mike Gillespie earned his 800th career victory May 24 when the Anteaters defeated UC Santa Barbara, 14-7. Gillespie was 801-487-2 entering the NCAA tournament regional action. The majority of his wins came at Southern California, a team he led for 20 seasons ending in 2006.

Conferences: The Southeastern Conference will distribute about $127.2 million to the conference members – the largest amount in SEC history – as part of the conference revenue-sharing plan. Last year, the conference distributed $122 million. The revenue-sharing plans include dollars from football television, bowls, the conference football championship, basketball television, conference basketball tournament and NCAA championships. The average amount distributed to each school was $10.6 million.

Miscellaneous: The Springfield, Massachusetts city council honored new Massachusetts head men’s basketball coach Derek Kellogg with a proclamation lauding Kellogg’s success as as high school player at Springfield Cathedral, a collegiate student-athlete with the Minutemen and as an assistant coach … The State College Quarterback Club, a Penn State football booster organization, will donate $50,000 to Penn State athletics for an endowment to assist the academic pursuits of Penn State football players. The money can be used for computers, tutors, academic support staff and other scholarly items … nullRon Wellman, athletics director at Wake Forest, was named 2008 Athletic Director of the Year by the Sports Business Journal and SportsBusiness Daily. Wellman was honored in a year that the Demon Deacons experienced the loss of men’s basketball coach Skip Prosser, a bowl victory and a national championship in men’s soccer.
