Milestones: Florida’s Caroline Burckle broke Janet Evans’ 18-year-old NCAA record in the 500-yard freestyle at the 2008 Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, finishing the race in 4:33.60. Evans’ mark was 4:34.39, set at the 1990 NCAA championships. Burckle became the first female Gator to win an individual national swimming championship in the last 12 years. The same day, Arizona’s 200-yard freestyle relay team (Lacey Nymeyer, Lara Jackson, Anna Turner and Taylor Baughman) broke an NCAA, U.S. Open and American record with a time of 1:26.90. A team from Arizona had set the previous record of 1:27.23 in 2007. The school’s 400-yard medley team broke a meet record set by California in 2007.

 

Facilities: Los Angeles Angels outfielder Torii Hunter donated $500,000 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff to help the school build a new ball park. Hunter, a graduate of Pine Bluff High School, did not attend college. The institution will name the new $9 million complex after Hunter. It is the largest donation to the school’s athletics program.

Conferences: Big 12 women’s basketball reached one million in home attendance for the second consecutive year and third time overall. The attendance for home women’s basketball games in 2007-08 is 1,000,990 with a minimum of three National Invitation Tournament games to play. The one-millionth fan attended the Texas Tech–Texas State WNIT game. The Big 12 is the only conference to host one million women’s basketball fans in a season … The Western Athletic Conference will stream its league gymnastics championships live on March 29. Miscellaneous: Connecticut has unveiled an online store to sell athletics photos. The UConn Photo Store features several hundred pictures of Connecticut athletics, including team photos and action shots of all 24 varsity teams. Framing options are available.
