Milestones: Georgia Southern’s baseball team set an NCAA all-divisions record March 15 with 14 home runs in a 26-8 win over Columbia. The previous Division I record was 13, most recently achieved by Alabama in 1999. The Division II record-holder is St. Mary’s (Texas), with 12 in a single game in 2001. Wooster holds the Division III record with 13 in 1986.
Facilities: Brigham Young will renovate its soccer stadium, featuring permanent grandstand seating for 2,140 in chair and bench-back seating. The complex will also feature a new entrance. Work on the project began earlier this week and should be complete this summer. New lights will also be installed. "We are very excited for the renovation of the stadium. It will greatly enhance the game experience for our loyal fans," said BYU women's soccer coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We are extremely appreciative to all those individuals who have played a role in making it happen."
Sport sponsorship: Long Island will add women’s bowling for the 2008-09 season, the school announced last week. The Blackbirds will begin the search for a coach immediately, joining three other Northeast Conference schools to offer the sport. It will be the 18th varsity sport sponsored by Long Island and the first new addition since women’s lacrosse in 2003.
Conferences:The Big Ten honored Alvin Caldwell of Danville, Illinois as the men’s basketball tournament’s one millionth fan. Caldwell received four all-session tickets to the 2009 tournament, a hotel stay, airline vouchers and a gift certificate to the Big Ten Store. Additionally, nearly 1,500 current students and recent Big Ten alumni participated in the conference’s first Career Expo in Indianapolis during the tournament. More than 50 companies participated … The Southern Conference marked its 25th anniversary of women’s championships with a celebration at the league’s basketball tournament earlier this month. The conference honored members of its 25th anniversary basketball team at the event.
