Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino won his 500th game December 18, becoming the 17th active Division I coach with 500 wins. The Cardinals beat Marshall, 85-75. Just four days later, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins secured his 600th career victory with a 77-54 win over Canisius.

Louisville's win snapped a two-game losing streak with pressure defense, accurate three-point shooting and high energy. Pitino received a standing ovation after the game. He called the milestone "insignificant" and said he was more pleased with his team pulling out a win after two losses.

"Your confidence is lacking when you lose two games in a row," Pitino said. "We needed this victory tonight badly."

Huggins attributed his success - he is one of just six active coaches with at least 600 victories - to a career of coaching good players.

"Not just good players, but guys that play together, care about each other, guys that are willing to make some sacrifices for the good of the team," he said. "I've been blessed."

The win brought Pitino's career record to 500-185 on December 18, while Huggins' record on December 22 was 600-212.
