Delaware has announced that it will drop men’s indoor track as a varsity sport and add women’s golf. The changes, which include several facilities improvements and construction projects, are part of a strategic plan for the Blue Hens athletics department.

The school cited Title IX compliance among reasons for the sport sponsorship changes, specifically balancing the large roster for football with corresponding opportunities for women to participate in athletics.

“Several men’s sports were considered during this process, as well as the impact on student-athletes, minority student-athletes and the varsity coaching staff. We anticipate that this will have minimal impact on our running program,” said Athletics Director Edgar Johnson.

Delaware will continue to field varsity men’s cross country and outdoor track and field, as well as its women’s programs. Track and field is not a Colonial Athletic Association-sponsored sport.

The strategic plan recommends a new recreation center to replace the Carpenter Sports Building and a new student-athlete performance center to serve as an athletics and academics facility for all student-athletes. The plan also recommends the Blue Hens study the construction of a new stadium and a larger basketball arena.

Renovations to the softball field, football practice field and swimming facility are also suggested.

“Despite the current world-wide economic stress that is impacting the U.S., state and university community, we remain committed to our overall strategic plan as well as this plan for athletics and recreation services,” said Delaware President Patrick Harker. “Given the uncertain economic times, some of our goals may take longer to achieve than we had hoped.”
