When the Associated Press named Drake men’s basketball coach Keno Davis its college basketball coach of the year last week, it made history. For the first time a father-and-son duo have won the prestigious honor.

Davis’ father, Tom, won the award in 1987 while coaching at Iowa.  He later moved to Drake, where his son succeeded him. Keno Davis is the second consecutive first-year head coach to win the award. Washington State’s Tony Bennett took the prize in 2007.

Drake began the season projected to finish ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference, but Davis led the team to the conference title and the school’s first national ranking since 1975. The team won a school-record 21 consecutive games and was s No. 5-seed in the NCAA championship tournament.

The Bulldogs lost in overtime to Western Kentucky in the first round.
