The Division I Legislative Council will review legislation in the 2008-09 cycle for the first time at its October 20-21 meeting in Indianapolis. It is the first meeting for the group, created as part of the reorganization of the Division I governance structure.
The body will discuss and learn more about pending proposals and will have the opportunity to offer suggestions and modifications to the legislation.
The group will also review and vote on legislation recommended by cabinets in the Division I governance structure as emergency or noncontroversial. Among those proposals is a recommendation from the Championships/Sports Management Cabinet that, for the purposes of applying NCAA tryout and camp/clinic regulations, a “prospective student-athlete” in men’s basketball is any individual who has started seventh grade. Also up for review is an Academic Cabinet proposal requiring institutions to submit final high school transcripts for early qualifiers by November 15 after initial enrollment.
Council members will also review the work of a variety of Division I cabinets, committees and working groups, including the Committee on Academic Performance and the academic enhancement working groups for men’s basketball and football.
