The NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet at its meeting June 24-25 in Oak Brook, Illinois, will review a recommendation regarding a new qualifier allocation formula for wrestling.

The Division I Wrestling Committee was directed by the cabinet to develop a selection procedure that would eliminate the use of historical data so selection into the wrestling championships would better reflect current-year performance and align more closely with criteria used for other Division I championships.

In the proposal, the at-large allocations (220 out of 330) into the championship will be determined through a primary criteria formula in which wrestlers will be measured on the following:

·         Winning percentage.

·         A rating percentage index conducted by the National Wrestling Coaches Association

·         A coaches' ranking poll (five coaches from each conference and regional qualifying tournament will be assigned to nationally rank wrestlers in two different weight classes).

If the recommendation meets approval from cabinet members, it will go into effect for the 2009 championship.

The cabinet will hear a progress report concerning the outdoor track and field championship format.

The Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee started a study group to examine a long-term solution to the regional alignment issues in the sport.

This will be the last meeting for the cabinet as it is currently constructed. In the fall, the governance reorganization begins, and the cabinet will consist of 31 members – one representative from each of the Division I multi-sport conferences.
