Boston College field hockey student-athlete Kathleen Murphy formed a team dubbed “Murphy’s Law” that participated in the April 13 MS LifeLines Walk of Boston and raised more than $9,000.
The effort was more than a fund-raiser for Murphy. After being diagnosed with MS last spring, this was an exercise in helping her own cause.
She had plenty of help. Team Murphy’s Law included the entire Boston College field hockey squad, coaching staff and five former players along with three members of the Boston College women’s ice hockey team. Thanks to high school friends with whom she is still close, the entire Providence College field hockey team, three field hockey players from Brown and five women’s ice hockey student-athletes from New Hampshire also joined the team.
Murphy’s initial fund-raising goal was $1,000. Then donations from friends, family members and co-workers of family members began pouring in. In addition, Murphy created a Web page for the event, which team members e-mailed to others. Team members who returned home for Easter break also collected donations from friends, family and neighbors, and some even mailed letters requesting contributions.
The end result was an impressive total of $9,319 raised for the MS Society.
It was the Boston College field hockey squad’s second opportunity to donate to the MS Society’s New England Chapter. This past fall, the team raised almost $500 by selling red MS bracelets with Murphy’s number 17 inscribed on them. Other Eagles teams, including the soccer and lacrosse squads, also have raised money in Murphy’s honor.
Murphy, who will embark on her senior season this fall, appeared in every game for the Eagles last year.
