Arizona State reinstated its men’s swimming program, two months after the sport was among several cut because of budget constraints. Supporters of the men’s swimming program raised the funds to continue the sport, following in the footsteps of backers of the wrestling program.
Wrestling was reinstated on May 23, just 10 days after Arizona State announced the elimination of the sport, along with men’s swimming and men’s tennis. At the time the sports were cut, Athletics Director Lisa Love indicated that with enough financial support from the community, the sports could be reinstated.
“It is comforting to know that we have had two separate sports communities step up and raise enough funds to support these programs,” Love said. “This is both remarkable and special in that for the second time, passionate alumni are giving back to protect the future of an Arizona State varsity sport that not only served them well, but as of today, will continue to serve future athletes.”
As with the wrestling program, fund-raising for men’s swimming will be ongoing.
