The NCAA News

An unheralded senior who transferred to Arizona State before his junior year claimed a surprise win in the 3,000-meter run, setting up the Sun Devils for a historic victory at the Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Kyle Alcorn, a transfer from Oregon who entered the event ranked 14th out of 16 qualifiers, won the next-to-last event at the championships Saturday, then the Sun Devils finished ahead of top-ranked Florida State in the 1,600-meter relay and joined the defending champion Arizona State women in completing a sweep of the Division I men’s and women’s indoor titles.

Arizona State is the first men’s team from the Pacific-10 Conference since 1977 to win an indoor track crown.

"I really cannot describe how proud I am of these kids," Arizona State coach Greg Kraft said of the men’s and women’s teams. "This is something you always dream of and I am just speechless right now. We really have a great group of kids. We are all very tired, but this is a great feeling."

Florida State entered the men’s competition at Arkansas as the favorite after winning last spring’s outdoor championships and cruising to victory at the Atlantic Coast Conference championships March 1. But the Seminoles suffered a blow to their hopes when defending 200-meter champion Walter Dix missed the trip to Fayetteville because of a case of strep throat.

Still, the Seminoles led team scoring after the first day of competition and then got a big boost from freshman Gonzalo Barroilhet’s heptathlon victory early on the second day. But Florida State managed to score only five more points -- scattered across three events -- during the remainder of the meet.

Arizona State also claimed a crucial win early in competition when the Sun Devils’ Ryan Whiting recorded a championships and collegiate record in the shot put Friday evening. Whiting’s toss of 21.73 meters (71 feet, 3 1/2 inches) beat a 31-year-old collegiate record held by Stanford’s Terry Albritton and five-year-old championships mark held by Nebraska’s Carl Myerscough.

The Sun Devils distance medley team also scored well, with Alcorn anchoring the team to second place in a preview of what was to come a day later.

However, Arizona State trailed the Seminoles by 10 points when Alcorn stepped to the line for the 3,000-meter run with the event’s 14th best qualifying time.

Midway through the race, Alcorn emerged from the pack to take the lead, surrendered it a short while later, then moved ahead to stay with about two laps remaining.

“I made a move early to get to the front because I wanted to control the pace,” he said. “I like to be able and rely on my kick and that was what got me the victory today.

“I didn't find out until after the race that my victory was going to give us a tie for the lead, so that is a great feeling."

Florida State won the first of three heats in the 1,600-meter relay, but could only watch from trackside as Arizona State posted the event’s third best time in the final heat and finished three places ahead of the Seminoles. The Sun Devils won the meet by three points.

"It almost hurts worse that we got close," said Florida State coach Bob Braman, whose team finished second indoors for the second straight year. "It almost hurts more because (1,600-meter relay) ran so well and gave us a chance up until the last race.”

Still, Braman was proud of the way his team stepped up to the challenge of competing without Dix.

"I think this shows that we're not a one-trick pony. We had a great meet. It's one thing to get second and have some ups and downs, it's another thing to get second and have a whale of a meet like we did."

Joining Arizona State’s Whiting in the records book was LSU sprinter Richard Thompson, whose 6.51-second time in the 60-meter dash topped a nine-year-old championships mark held by Arizona State’s Marcus Brunson.

Leonel Manzano of Texas successfully defended his indoor title in the mile run and Egor Agafonov of Kansas repeated as champion in the 35-pound weight throw.
